Bypass-level weight loss with one join instead of two. Our usual operation when a sleeve has stopped working or a band has to come out.
Same package as every operation here: a named IFSO surgeon, a JCI-accredited hospital, four nights until discharge, no hotel, no deposit.
The stomach is divided to form a long, narrow pouch. A loop of small intestine is brought up and joined to it with a single connection, so food bypasses the first part of the bowel. You eat less, absorb less, and the gut hormones that drive hunger and blood sugar change.
The classic Roux-en-Y bypass needs two connections. The mini bypass needs one, which shortens the operation and removes one site where a problem can occur.
Like every bypass, it improves type 2 diabetes quickly, often before much weight has gone.
In the surgeon's experience deficiencies are much less of an issue than after a classic Roux-en-Y, and the lifelong supplement need is lower. Vitamins and periodic bloods remain part of life after any bypass.
When a sleeve has stretched or caused reflux, or when a gastric band is removed, the conversion we most often perform is to a mini bypass.
| Gastric sleeve | Mini gastric bypass | Roux-en-Y bypass | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | £2,499 | £2,999 | £2,999 |
| Intestinal joins | None | One | Two |
| Existing reflux | Can worsen it | Usually suitable if not severe | Best choice for severe reflux |
| Type 2 diabetes | Improves | Strong effect | Strong effect |
| After a failed sleeve or band | Re-sleeve in selected cases | Our usual conversion | In selected cases |
| Supplements for life | Yes, basic | Yes | Yes, most demanding |
| Hospital stay | 4 nights | 4 nights | 4 nights |
You do not have to choose. Send your details and the surgeon tells you which operation he would do and why. For revision patients the final decision is made after an endoscopy on arrival, because what the stomach looks like matters more than what was planned by message.
Jacqueline: gastric band removal and mini gastric bypassFilmed in her hospital room in İzmirJacqueline's gastric band removal and mini bypass video – key moments →
Jacqueline had a gastric band that no longer worked. It was removed and converted to a mini gastric bypass in one operation, which is how most band conversions are done here. Two stages are only needed when a band has eroded into the stomach.
Band removal with conversion to a mini bypass is £3,800 and takes about two and a half hours; conversion to a sleeve is £3,500 and takes about two hours. The port and tubing under the skin come out in the same operation. More on the revision surgery page.

With Op. Dr. Volkan Arayıcı a mini gastric bypass is £2,999, all-inclusive: tests, operation, four nights in hospital, companion, transfers, interpreter, medication and twelve months of follow-up. Only flights are extra.
A one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB): a long, narrow stomach pouch is created and joined to a loop of small intestine with a single connection. The classic Roux-en-Y bypass uses two connections.
For the right patient, yes: it gives bypass-level weight loss and diabetes improvement with one join instead of two. It is our usual choice when a sleeve has stopped working or when a gastric band is converted to a bypass.
With the mini bypass, nutritional deficiencies are much less of an issue than with the classic Roux-en-Y, and the lifelong supplement need is lower. The Roux-en-Y remains the better choice in some patients with severe reflux. The surgeon decides between them from your details; the price is the same.
Slightly, because there is an intestinal join. That is why the hospital stay is not shortened: four nights, exactly as for a sleeve.
A small share of patients develop bile reflux after a one-anastomosis bypass. If it becomes troublesome it can be converted to a Roux-en-Y. It is one of the things the surgeon weighs before recommending the operation.
Five days: arrival and bloods on day one, tests and surgery on day two, four nights in hospital, discharge and airport on day five.
Height, weight, age, and whether you have reflux, diabetes or a previous operation. The surgeon tells you which operation he would do, free and without obligation.
Those three details decide between a sleeve, a mini bypass and a Roux-en-Y more than anything else.
